Prolog Coffee

When it comes to finding the best coffee spot in Copenhagen, it’s fair to say that there are a few places to choose from. One of my favourites is Prolog Coffee in the Meatpacking District. They serve one of the absolute best coffees in town, without a doubt.
This is a no-fuss place, it’s all about really good coffee, good beans, the perfect roast, and the correct dose of beans for every cup of coffee. Expect nerdy coffee talk from the passionate baristas, but still a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Prolog Coffee call themselves caring craftsmen. And that’s what you will meet. By the impressive coffee station on the counter, you will see baristas taking orders and weighing the amount of coffee beans for your cup of coffee. In case you need input on what type of roast to choose, simply ask and you can expect guidance just like if you were to choose the perfect glass of wine for your meal.
LOOKS
The word authentic can seem so corny, but it’s actually the essence of Prolog. This place is as authentic Meatpacking District as it gets. The characteristic blue colour and the white tiles make out the headlines for the interior but you will also find Japanese and Nordic influences. The rice paper lamp with beautiful, organic shapes above the counter is designed by Copenhagen-based OeO Studio that are deeply influenced by Japan.
Back in the days, the entire Meatpacking District was (as the name refers to) a district for butchers with its own slaughterhouse and trade scene. In the 90s, the area was listed and pointed out as one of 25 national industrial memories worth preserving. The listing means that there are special rules to follow for both interior and exterior when renovating the buildings. As a result, Prolog Coffee is like stepping into a small butcher shop in terms of interior, only packed with modern designs, delicious coffee, freshly baked goods, and magazines to browse through.
The only minus for Prolog is the size of the place. It’s small and has few seats. You can be lucky to find a spot if you arrive early or out of peak hours. When you drop by in the summertime they have more seats outside in the sun. But don’t expect to find seats if you’re a big crowd.

TASTE
The coffee is fantastic. What more to say. Jonas Gehl from Prolog won the title as the Best Barista in Denmark in 2019 and for good reason. You can choose your coffee from several specially selected beans and find the coffee type that serves your taste buds. In case you find a new favourite, you can buy a bag of coffee to bring home.
If you visit in the morning (or actually any time of the day) you simply must try one of the organic baked goods. The cinnamon swirl is a killer. You can also get a small portion of yoghurt and granola if you’re more in the mood for that.

VIBE
Chilled. Friendly. These guys know what they are doing, and they are happy to fall into conversation about it. The keyword is passion, and that shines through. But this place is not only for connoisseurs, everyone is welcome. No snobbish attitudes here. On their website, Prolog states ‘by being nice and generous, we always make you feel welcome and promise to serve your next high’. That’s exactly the vibe and experience you can expect.
VALUE FOR MONEY
Copenhagen was named the most expensive coffee city in the world in 2019 by Deutsche Bank. So, this is given. Don’t go here for the cheap coffee in town. But I tell you, the coffee here is worth every penny. Prolog offers a membership with subscription to their coffee where they send you two bags of coffee each month for 200 DKK. This is not cheap, but I promise you that you will choose the right occasions to make those cups of coffee at home.
