Mexico meets Copenhagen in this charming place on Christianshavn. Donda is a perfect place to start a fun night out with friends. On a buzzing Friday, it’s like stepping into an upbeat South American atmosphere where you simply forget about time and place and just enjoy yourself, your company, and some really good food and drinks.
Donda serves seriously good food and snacks - made for sharing. It’s South America infused in a Nordic setting. Think tacos, quesadillas and ceviche. Fried prawns, cilantro, and homemade dips. Donda adds a Nordic touch with their natural wines and a warm, modern décor.
During covid lockdown, they managed to turn the restaurant into a ‘take away taqueria’, as they put it, serving fantastic take away family-style taco kits – to much joy for neighbours and the supportive community around the restaurant. And you get why! This food is really tasty.
LOOKS
Before you enter Donda, take a look around in one of the most charming and characteristic places in Copenhagen, Christianshavn. With a view to Knippelsbro (the bridge with the iconic copper towers), the canals, and the Foreign Ministry just around the corner, this location is an absolute seller.
Christianshavn is one of the oldest parts of Copenhagen known for its canals and townhouses. In recent years, new shops and restaurants have popped up in the area. The new Inner Harbour Bridge from Nyhavn to Christianshavn has also brought new life and food scene to the area with Noma’s Poppl Burger Restaurant and Barr Restaurant along with the street food area Broens Gadekøkken.
Donda is located in the older part of Christianshavn. The interior has an international vibe mixed with a Nordic touch and Latin American influences. Tables are placed tight and you can hang in the bar while you wait. In the bar, you will also find Mexican décor like skull sculptures and mezcal bottles that send your thoughts to Latin America. But at the same time, this place has a certain Nordic touch with oak moldings along the walls and Louis Poulsen lighting. A delicate and successful mix.

TASTE
You literally get a bite of South America at Donda. The ceviche is fresh, snacks are delicate, and you share almost everything with your dinner date. Cozy and intimate.
While you wait for your table or decide what you’re into from the menu, try one of the delicate drinks from the bar menu. A pisco sour or maybe a mezcal infused cocktail. That will immediately set you in the right mood.
We had oysters, tacos with prawns and meat served family-style. We also had to try their waffle/chocolate/mango dessert too as our neighbouring table had this served. It looked too delicious to not finish off a great night with this. Everything was very tasty. One of those meals you know you want to have again, the minute you leave the place.
If you are into natural wine, this is also a go to place. They have a very good selection and can help you pair the wine to what you are having.

VIBE
The vibe at Donda is very upbeat and at peak hours its busy, since this is a small place.
They call themselves Eatery and Bar, and this is what you get. When I last stopped by to have dinner (make sure to reserve beforehand) the place was packed. You might have to wait a bit to get your table, but take this as the perfect chance to try a cocktail in the bar and kick off the night in a nice and relaxed way. The staff is friendly, helpful, and you get a sense of a Donda family working there.
VALUE FOR MONEY
Donda is worth every penny. For what you get; fresh fish, vegetables, and lots of home-made sauces, dips and other goodies, this is more than reasonable prices. Donda is a place that you want to support. The way they communicate with their guests and neighbours, you get a sense of gratitude. And for me, that’s reason enough to support, especially when the interior is inviting, the food is this tasty, and the vibe is good.
